Here in New Hampshire the flowers are blooming and spring seems to be upon us. As warm
weather approaches, traveling has been on our minds, and so we have chosen travel tips as
the topic for this newsletter. Included below are suggestions about the anniversary
celebrations of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 250th birthday in Weimar, Leipzig's Opera,
the Berlin Festival and cultural events in the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. This
is just a small selection of places and events that could be possible destinations for the

1999 ist das 250. Geburtsjahr von Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In vielen deutschen Städten
wird dieses Ereignis ausgiebig zelebriert. Weimar, das in Goethes Leben und Werk eine
wichtige Rolle spielte, begeht das Jubiläum mit unzähligen Veranstaltungen. Die wohl
interessanteste Darbietung ist der Goethe-Stuhl, ein Möbel, auf dem an jedem Tag dieses
Jahres Goethe gelesen wird. Jeden Tag an einem anderen Ort in der Stadt aufgestellt, lesen
Leute verschiedener Nationen und Sprachen auf dem Stuhl "ihren" Goethe. Am
Geburtstag des Dichters (dem 28. August) bietet Goethes Wohnhaus und der Theaterplatz die
Kulisse für den Goethe-Stuhl. An diesem besonderen Tag wird ein großes Geburtstagsfest
mit Strassentheater, Umzügen und Feuerwerk gefeiert.

Vom 26. Mai bis am 18. Juli präsentiert die Stiftung Weimarer Klassik im Goethe- und
Schillerarchiv die Ausstellung "Morgenlandfahrten Goethes". Die Ausstellung
zeigt Dokumente, die über Goethes lebenslange Auseinandersetzung mit der Kultur des Nahen
und Fernen Ostens Auskunft geben. Die Stiftung Weimarer Klassik ist Teil des Goethe

Die 49. Berliner Festwochen werden zwischen dem 3. September und dem 29. September
abgehalten. Das Musikprogramm ist dem Gesamtwerk Gustav Mahlers gewidmet und bietet
Aufführungen von Mahlers Sinfonien, Liedern, und rekonstruierten Werken. Besonders
interessant sind die original Welte-Mignon-Aufnahmen aus dem Jahre 1905, gespielt von
Gustav Mahler selbst auf einem Welte-Selbstspielflügel (am Montag, den 27. September).

Orchestra, das Scharoun Ensemble, das Gustav-Mahler-Jugendorchester, das Chamber Orchestra

Schloss Schönbrunn in Wien ein attraktives Ausflugsziel sein. Mit seinen ausgedehnten
Parkanlagen und dem Museumskomplex ist das Schloss eines der wichtigsten Kulturgüter
Österreichs. Von besonderem Reiz ist das Schönbrunner Schlossmarionettentheater, das mit
seinen handgefertigten Puppen wunderbare Fantasiewelten entstehen lässt. "Die
Zauberflöte", Mozarts wohl beliebtestes Werk, und "Aladdin", ein Märchen
aus Tausendundeiner Nacht, sind die beiden Stücke, die das ganze Jahr über, von Mittwoch
bis Sonntag, zwischen 16.00 und 20.00 Uhr aufgeführt werden.

1999 is the 250th anniversary of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's birthday. In many German
cities this is being celebrated extensively. Weimar, a very important city in Goethe's
life and work, commemorates the anniversary with countless events. Certainly, one of the
most interesting happenings is the Goethe-chair, a piece of furniture, on which literature
by Goethe is being read every day of this year. Set up daily in a different spot in the
city, people of various nations and languages read "their" Goethe on it. On the
poet's birthday (August 28) Goethe's home and the Theater Square will be the backdrop for
the Goethe-chair. On this special day a big birthday bash will celebrate the anniversary
with street theater, parades and fireworks.

From May 26 to June 18 the foundation Weimarer Klassik presents the exhibit "Goethe's
Journeys to the Orient" in the Goethe and Schiller archive. The exhibit documents

For those among you who will travel to Austria this summer, the Schönbrunn Palace in
Vienna could be an attractive destination. With its extensive parks and its museum complex
the palace is one of Austria's most important cultural assets. The Schönbrunn Palace
Puppet Theater has a special appeal, creating fanciful worlds with its handmade puppets.
"The Magic Flute", Mozart's supposedly most popular work and
"Aladdin", a fairy tale from The 1001 Nights are the two plays performed all
year, Wednesday through Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
